Science
The world is an ever changing place and we ensure that our students keep ahead of the game by continually developing the courses we present. Many skills that will be useful throughout life are practiced in science. The need for our young people to be able to interpret and evaluate complex and detailed information increases on a daily basis. We see it as our responsibility to give our students the opportunities to explore the many issues facing the future of human society so that they leave our school informed and empowered.
All our labs are equipped with state of the art laptops and interactive white boards. These enable us to deliver the syllabus in innovation ways. ICT is fully integrated into lessons and the science department boasts it's own dedicated ICT suite.
In all our courses we aim to enable students to develop a clear understanding of all aspects of science. Lessons are presented in a creative, stimulating and exciting format that capture the imagination of the learner.
Our aim is to make science fun… the outcomes are clear: increased enthusiasm, better understanding and improved grades.
At GCSE there are up to three qualifications available:
1) GCSE Core Science ~ Studied during Year 10 and 11
All students must take GCSE Core Science. It is worth one GCSE. It will help students make sense of the science they encounter in everyday life and appreciate what it can tell you about yourself, your environment and the Universe. This course is assessed by three module examinations set and marked by the examination board (total marks 50%). A terminal examination set and marked by the examination board (total marks 16.7%) and an internally assessed case study and data analysis session (total marks 33.3%)
If they undertake a second Science GCSE they can choose between GCSE Additional Science and GCSE Applied Science.
2a) GCSE Additional Science
This will develop their fundamental scientific ideas, with an emphasis on explanation and concepts. It will prepare them for more advanced courses which may lead to further training as scientists or work in science related fields such as engineering or medicine. This course is assessed through three module examinations set and marked by the examination board (total marks 50%). A terminal examination set and marked by the examination board (total marks 16.7%) and an internally assessed practical investigation (total marks 33.3%).
or
2b) GCSE Applied Science
This course aims to stimulate the development of their practical scientific capabilities. It prepares them for more advanced courses and may lead to careers in a variety of technical fields. This course is assessed through three module examinations set and marked by the examination board (total marks 50%). Students will also produce a work related portfolio that will demonstrate your understanding of standard science procedures, suitability tests and work-related reports. (total marks 50%)
3) If they opt to complete a third Science GCSE they study Separate Sciences and gain GCSE’s in Biology, Physics and Chemistry—Studied during year 10 and 11.
This course further extends your knowledge and understanding of specific areas of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
