Pool Academy students have been praised for their skills after visiting a debate competition.
Members of the school’s debate club travelled to Truro College recently to give a speech on a topic chosen for the Great Debate 2018 competition.
Robert Bond, Year 10, said they were not old enough to enter the main competition but were still able to put across their arguments during the day.
Pool Academy student Neve won the Under 16 Debate.
Robert said: “We debated on the extension of Franchise in 1918.
“I researched it a week or two in advance and thought about how to construct the speech.
“It was also good to see older sixth forms debating.
“We were told we did quite well and we all enjoyed it. It was a new experience for us to go to Truro and it was good to see the college.”
Robert said Pool Academy’s debate club gives students the opportunity to speak about topics in the news and current affairs.
He said: “We are hoping to enter competitions in the future.”
Victoria Gribble, from Pool Academy said: “I was amazed at the students’ confidence to produce a good argument and talk out loud in front of college students, staff and members from universities.
“Both students and staff were amazed with our students abilities.
“Congratulations to Neve who won the Under 16 debate.”
