Surfing students enjoyed European championships

Two surfers from Pool Academy scored high in European championships over the summer holidays.

Tom Catten, Year 9, and Xander Harris, Year 10, travelled to Portugal over the summer holidays after being chosen as England Bodyboarding Under 16s team members. The two boys were representing the country at the ESF EURO Juniors in July.

Tom competed against 34 others in the under 16 category and was placed 9th overall. Xander was placed 11th in the Under 18 category.

Both boys said they had a great time and would love to go back again and compete next time.

Tom has been surfing for more than a year and a half.  He said: “It was really good. The surf was good in the first few days but it was different to Cornwall waves. The Cornwall team came forth over all in the competition.”

Xander, who had only been bodyboarding for about 12 months before taking part, said: “It was a great experience and I hope to go again next year. It was nice there but it was also nice to come back and surf in Cornwall again.”

The boys spent 10 days in Portugal arriving before the competition began so they were able to get used to the waves.
