Pool Academy

The humanities deal with aspects of human society and culture.  Our faculty delivers studies in geography, history, beliefs and ethics along with sociology.  The lessons are delivered by a team of dedicated, experienced, professional, specialist teachers.  We develop the skills, knowledge and love of the subjects in our students through carefully chosen content, immersive and exciting school trips and high quality lessons.

Geography Vision Statement

At Pool Academy, we believe in the importance of Geographical studies to raise students’ awareness and love of the wider world. The study of geography promotes students’ interest and stimulates a sense of wonder and awe about places. We inspire students to think about and engage with the World around them. It builds on students’ own experiences and knowledge and teaches them new skills to make sense of a complex and dynamically changing world. It explains where places are, how places and landscapes are formed, how people and their environment interact, and how we live in a cultural diverse world that is interconnected. It builds on pupils' own experiences to investigate places at all scales, from the personal to the global.

History Vision Statement

The aim of the History curriculum is to ensure all students, regardless of prior ability or circumstance, enjoy their History lessons and thrive in the History classroom. The coverage of subjects will be broad and cover local, British and world History, to try and ensure students leave Pool Academy with coherent knowledge and understanding about the past. Such will help to stimulate each student’s curiosity to know more about the past. Students will be challenged to compliment a depth of knowledge with a developing ability to demonstrate their historical skills. We want all our students to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, develop perspective and judgement as well as write accurate narratives of the past. We aim for students to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time. This will help students to develop their moral, cultural, social and political understanding. All students will realise History is open to interpretation and engage with those interpretations.  We will ensure all students develop an appreciation and knowledge of the language of history and write with increasing sophistication. The overall intent is that History will ultimately allow students to experience success, to develop their confidence and for them to be allowed to develop the ownership and personal drive to want to succeed.
