Former student works on Mary Poppins Returns set
A former Pool Academy student who has worked on the Mary Poppins Returns set and a Star Wars film says you just need to be 'true to yourself'.
Kate Carson discovered her passion for art at Pool Academy and is thankful to her teachers for believing in her.
She left school in 2013 and studied an Art and Design diploma at Truro College. She then applied to UAL London College of fashion to study hair, makeup and prosthetics for performance.
During her studies she worked on Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns in the crowd department as a trainee hair and makeup artist. After graduating in 2018 she went to work on Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker set.
In 2018 she joined Disney Cruise Line as a cosmetologist and costumer and currently works for the shows here. As part of her work she tends to more than 200 wigs and helps make all the princesses look perfect.
She said: “I love what I do. My job is the best I’m able to go to work and it doesn’t even feel like work.
“I was always interested in Art and I found my passion at school. Pool Academy gave me the access to explore my interests within art and this really helped my drive for what I wanted to do.
“Two teachers really inspired me were Miss Peach and Miss Roberts. Also my tutor Mrs Ludlow was another person who always believed in me at school despite me not being the most academic. She always had faith in me as a student.
“My advice to current students is to trust your instincts, no matter anyone’s opinion of what you want to do in life. Be true to yourself, you only have one life and you need to make the best of it. Make a difference and believe in your capabilities, you are your biggest fan you have to work hard and go and get it, nothing worth fighting for comes easily.”
