Athletics star top in county

A Pool Academy student has come first in Cornwall Under 13s after winning a number of athletic events.

Jemma Kearney, Year 7, came first in Cornwall after taking part in Under 13 Discus, 1500 metres and Shotput at Carn Brea Leisure Centre.

The Cornwall County Athletic Association held its Athletics Championships recently and Jemma, who trains with Cornwall Athletic Club, entered a number of the events.

She said she had entered the competition in the past but this was the first time she has won.

She said: “I am first in Cornwall for everything I entered in the Under 13s category and in discus I am 13th in the UK.

“I was training hard for the event. I train with Cornwall Athletics Club.

“I didn’t expect to win when I took part so it was a nice surprise that they gave it to me.

“I was there for the whole day. When it was the running event it started to rain really heavily so we had to wait for it to stop.

“I love running and it is the one thing I mainly train for.

“I train with Cornwall Athletic Club on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. I also take part in the Heartlands Park run 5k on Saturdays.

“I definitely love running.”

Jemma said she is now training hard for a number of other events coming up in the future.

Dave Buzza, PE Teacher, said: “Congratulations to Jemma for doing so well at the Cornwall AA Championships.

"It is great when we hear of Pool Academy students doing so well in sporting events.

"Keep up the good work."
