Monthly Letter (September 2018)

Dear Parents / Carers

Welcome back to another exciting term.  We would like to say a special ‘welcome’ to our new Year 7 parents - we look forward to working with you over the next 5 years.

This is the first of our monthly letters (although you can expect 2 in September) to keep you updated with a few of the brilliant events that have either happened in the last month, or that you and your child can look forward to in the coming one.

We try to keep the news section of our school website ( updated every day, along with our Facebook page (  I know many of you have already been enjoying reading the introductions about our new staff, along with hearing about our growing partnership with Plymouth Argyle.  If you have any trouble accessing these stories, please contact Phil Jones (Head of Academy Services) either on the normal school number (01209 712 220) or by emailing

Our students are looking incredibly smart in their school uniform and we thank you for supporting us with this.  If you have any items that are still outstanding, Lorna Gribble ( is continuing to sell our second hand uniform so please do pop in and see her or give her a ring / email.

You may remember from last year that we mentioned a Community Question and Answer session, originally planned for 11th September.  We’re keen to get as many people from across the community to attend the evening so we’ve now rescheduled this to 9th October, from 18:30.  We will be sending you some more details next week so I hope you will be able to make it.

Our Open Evening this year is Thursday 20th September, 5pm - 8pm.  This evening is always very well attended by prospective students and parents and we look forward to seeing many of them there on the night.  We are also inviting any member of the community to attend the evening so they can have a look around the school and see why we are so proud of all the students who attend the academy.  If you are free during that evening, we would love to see you too! During the evening we hope to welcome Pilgrim Pete (mascot for Plymouth Argyle) to celebrate our growing partnership with them.  We will also have our own community Art Gallery open for everyone to see works from national and international artists - there may even be some work from local budding artists that you know too!

Last year we made some really exciting appointments, including 4 new Heads of Faculty.  Mr Pete Ryder, Mr Alastair James, Mrs Emily Cromey and Mr Tim Bareham would love to meet with you to discuss their vision for their faculty areas and how they will support your child to secure the very best academic outcomes.  They are holding an introductory evening on Wednesday 12th September from 18:00 in the Main Hall and will be available to answer any questions you have. If you can’t make the evening but are keen to make contact with them, their email addresses can be found on our website, or you can ring the normal school number to make an appointment.

Tesco has chosen Pool Academy as one of their most recent charities for the blue token collections.  The collection pot is for the Academy and its Community Fitness Suite which is due to open this term.  The collection will be running until 31st October and school staff are urging shoppers to support them by dropping blue tokens in their slot.  We would love the local community to get behind us with the new fitness suite which will be used by our students and members of the local community.   Please help to support us by popping your blue tokens into the collection point at Tesco.

I will write to you again at the end of the month but for now, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me ( .

Yours faithfully,

Miss Claire Meakin
